Medical condition

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare genetic disorder that affects the nerves and muscles. It is caused by a mutation in the SMN1 gene, which is responsible for producing the survival motor neuron (SMN) protein. SMN protein is essential for the proper function of motor neurons, which are the nerve cells that control muscle movement. Without enough SMN protein, motor neurons die, leading to muscle weakness and atrophy.

• Types of SMA
There are several types of SMA, ranging from mild to severe. The most common type is type 1 SMA, which affects infants and is characterized by severe muscle weakness and difficulty breathing and swallowing. Type 2 SMA affects toddlers and is characterized by muscle weakness and difficulty walking. Type 3 SMA affects older children and adults and is characterized by muscle weakness and fatigue.
• Symptoms of SMA
The symptoms of SMA can vary depending on the type of SMA and the severity of the condition. Common symptoms include muscle weakness, difficulty breathing and swallowing, fatigue, and scoliosis. In severe cases, SMA can be fatal.
• Treatment for SMA
There is no cure for SMA, but there are treatments that can help to improve the quality of life for those who have it. Treatments include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and medication. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to correct scoliosis or other complications of SMA.
• Outlook for SMA
