After a disappointing 5-12 finish in 2022, can the Atlanta Falcons make the playoffs in 2023?

The Falcons have a lot of talent on their roster, including quarterback Marcus Mariota, wide receiver Drake London, and running back Cordarrelle Patterson. They also have a new head coach in Arthur Smith, who is known for his offensive prowess. However, the Falcons play in a tough division, the NFC South, which also includes the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, and Carolina Panthers. All three of those teams are expected to be competitive in 2023.

If the Falcons want to make the playoffs, they will need to improve their defense, which was one of the worst in the NFL in 2022. They also need to stay healthy, as they were plagued by injuries last season. If they can do those things, they have the potential to be a playoff team in 2023.

The Falcons' schedule is relatively favorable in 2023. They play just four games against teams that made the playoffs in 2022. They also have a lot of home games, which could give them an advantage. If the Falcons can take advantage of their schedule, they have a good chance of making the playoffs.

Can the Falcons Make the Playoffs 2023?

The Atlanta Falcons have a lot of talent on their roster, but they have a lot of question marks as well. Can they make the playoffs in 2023? Here are five key aspects to consider:

• Quarterback play: Marcus Mariota is a solid quarterback, but he is not a top-tier quarterback. He will need to play at a high level if the Falcons want to make the playoffs.
• Offensive line play: The Falcons' offensive line is one of the worst in the NFL. They need to improve their pass protection and run blocking if they want to be successful in 2023.
• Defensive play: The Falcons' defense was one of the worst in the NFL in 2022. They need to improve their pass rush and run defense if they want to make the playoffs in 2023.
• Schedule: The Falcons have a relatively favorable schedule in 2023. They play just four games against teams that made the playoffs in 2022. They also have a lot of home games, which could give them an advantage.
• Coaching: Arthur Smith is a good coach, but he is still relatively inexperienced. He will need to make some good decisions in 2023 if the Falcons want to make the playoffs.

The Falcons have a lot of potential, but they also have a lot of question marks. If they can answer those question marks, they have a good chance of making the playoffs in 2023.

Quarterback play

Marcus Mariota is a solid quarterback, but he is not a top-tier quarterback. He has a good arm and is a good runner, but he is not always accurate with his passes. He also has a tendency to make mistakes at inopportune times.

• Accuracy: Mariota's accuracy has been a problem throughout his career. In 2022, he completed just 61.3% of his passes, which ranked 27th in the NFL. He also threw 13 interceptions, which tied for 10th most in the NFL.
• Decision-making: Mariota has also struggled with decision-making at times. He has a tendency to hold onto the ball too long, which can lead to sacks and fumbles. He also sometimes makes poor decisions about when to throw the ball and when to run.
• Leadership: Mariota is a good leader, but he needs to be more vocal and assertive on the field. He needs to be able to get his teammates to follow him and believe in him.

If Mariota can improve his accuracy, decision-making, and leadership, he can be a good quarterback for the Falcons. However, if he does not improve, the Falcons will likely struggle to make the playoffs.

Offensive line play

The offensive line is responsible for protecting the quarterback and creating running lanes for the running backs. If the offensive line does not play well, the quarterback will be sacked frequently and the running backs will not be able to gain yards. This will make it difficult for the Falcons to score points and win games.

The Falcons' offensive line has been one of the worst in the NFL in recent years. In 2022, they allowed 43 sacks, which was the fourth most in the NFL. They also ranked 31st in the NFL in rushing yards per game.

If the Falcons want to make the playoffs in 2023, they need to improve their offensive line play. They need to find a way to protect their quarterback and create running lanes for their running backs. If they can do that, they will be a much more difficult team to beat.

Here are some examples of how poor offensive line play can hurt a team's chances of winning:

• In 2022, the Houston Texans had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. They allowed 62 sacks, which was the most in the NFL. This led to quarterback Davis Mills being sacked a league-high 54 times. The Texans finished the season with a 3-13-1 record.
• In 2021, the Jacksonville Jaguars had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. They allowed 44 sacks, which was the fifth most in the NFL. This led to quarterback Trevor Lawrence being sacked 32 times. The Jaguars finished the season with a 3-14 record.

These are just two examples of how poor offensive line play can hurt a team's chances of winning. If the Falcons want to make the playoffs in 2023, they need to improve their offensive line play.

Defensive play

The Falcons' defense was one of the worst in the NFL in 2022. They allowed the most points per game (30.8) and the most yards per game (413.1). They also had the fewest sacks (21) and the fewest interceptions (9).

• Pass rush: The Falcons' pass rush was one of the worst in the NFL in 2022. They had just 21 sacks, which was the second fewest in the NFL. This lack of a pass rush made it difficult for the Falcons to generate turnovers and get off the field on third down.
• Run defense: The Falcons' run defense was also one of the worst in the NFL in 2022. They allowed 149.4 rushing yards per game, which was the fourth most in the NFL. This lack of a run defense made it difficult for the Falcons to stop teams from controlling the clock and keeping their offense off the field.

If the Falcons want to make the playoffs in 2023, they need to improve their defensive play. They need to find a way to generate more pressure on the quarterback and stop the run. If they can do that, they will be a much more difficult team to beat.

Schedule

The Falcons' schedule is one of the easiest in the NFL in 2023. They play just four games against teams that made the playoffs in 2022: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, and Los Angeles Rams. The rest of their schedule is against teams that finished below .500 in 2022.

The Falcons also have a lot of home games in 2023. They play eight games at home and just eight games on the road. This gives them a significant advantage, as teams typically play better at home than they do on the road.

The Falcons' favorable schedule gives them a good chance of making the playoffs in 2023. If they can take advantage of their schedule and win their home games, they should be in contention for a playoff spot.

Here are some examples of how a favorable schedule can help a team make the playoffs:

• In 2022, the Philadelphia Eagles had one of the easiest schedules in the NFL. They played just four games against teams that made the playoffs in 2021. The Eagles finished the season with a 9-8 record and made the playoffs as a wild card team.
• In 2021, the Washington Football Team had one of the most difficult schedules in the NFL. They played seven games against teams that made the playoffs in 2020. The Washington Football Team finished the season with a 7-10 record and missed the playoffs.

These examples show that a favorable schedule can give a team a significant advantage in the NFL. The Falcons' favorable schedule gives them a good chance of making the playoffs in 2023.

Coaching

The head coach plays a vital role in a team's success. They are responsible for making decisions about everything from play-calling to player personnel. A good coach can make a big difference in a team's performance, and a bad coach can sabotage even the most talented team.

Arthur Smith is a good coach, but he is still relatively inexperienced. He has only been a head coach for two seasons, and he has a career record of 14-18. However, he has shown a lot of promise in his short time as the Falcons' head coach. He has a good offensive mind, and he has been able to get the most out of his players.

In 2023, Smith will need to make some good decisions if the Falcons want to make the playoffs. He will need to find a way to improve the team's defense, and he will need to get more consistent play from his quarterback, Marcus Mariota. If Smith can do those things, the Falcons have a good chance of making the playoffs.

Here are some examples of how coaching can affect a team's success:

• In 2022, the Cincinnati Bengals made a surprising run to the Super Bowl. One of the biggest reasons for their success was the coaching of Zac Taylor. Taylor is a young coach, but he has a lot of experience in the NFL. He was able to get the most out of his players, and he made some key decisions that helped the Bengals win games.
• In 2021, the Jacksonville Jaguars had one of the worst seasons in NFL history. One of the biggest reasons for their struggles was the coaching of Urban Meyer. Meyer is a successful college coach, but he had no experience in the NFL. He made a lot of bad decisions, and he lost the respect of his players.

These examples show that coaching can have a big impact on a team's success. The Falcons are lucky to have a good coach in Arthur Smith. If Smith can continue to develop as a coach, the Falcons have a good chance of making the playoffs in 2023.
